Chapter 10: Cleaners Are Rule Breakers

Summary:

Cleaners aren’t reckless, but they don’t follow rules just because they’re “supposed to.” If a rule slows them down or doesn’t make sense for their goal, they question it. They experiment, adapt, and change things up—not to be rebellious, but to be effective. Grover says Cleaners lead by instinct, not by tradition.

How This Relates to Performing:

In music, you’re taught rules: strum this way, count this way, stay in tempo. And those are important. But eventually, if you want to grow, you’ll have to start leading. This chapter gives you permission to explore. A Cleaner doesn’t break rules out of rebellion—they break them because they found something better, something that works for them and serves the performance.

You can start experimenting with how you interpret songs. Maybe a slight tempo shift feels more natural. Maybe a pause adds drama. Maybe changing a dynamic gives the piece more emotional punch. That’s what being an artist is about—making choices that elevate the music. As long as you’ve done the work and understand the structure, you earn the right to lead the song in a way that reflects you.

Cleaners also break mental rules. The idea that you’re “not good enough” or “not ready yet”? Break it. The belief that someone else’s way is always better? Break it. If you’ve trained, prepared, and explored your voice—then you get to lead. This mindset builds not just confidence but freedom on stage.

So learn the rules. Master them. Then find your own way through the music. That’s not disrespect—it’s leadership. And Cleaners lead.
