Chapter 5: You Have to Be Comfortable Being Alone

Summary:

Cleaners don’t need a crowd or a coach standing over their shoulder to work hard. They thrive in solitude. Grover explains that greatness is built in the moments when no one is watching. Most people only push themselves when someone else is around. Cleaners don’t wait for motivation—they train in silence because they’re driven from within.

How This Relates to Performing:

This chapter is your reminder that some of your most important growth will happen when you’re alone with your instrument. Nobody clapping, nobody checking your progress—just you, your ʻukulele, and your willingness to repeat a measure until it’s clean. That’s where the real confidence is built. It’s not always fun. It’s not always glamorous. But those private sessions are what will carry you in front of the lights.

You have to learn to enjoy the quiet. In the quiet, you figure things out. You start seeing the details—the subtle buzz on one fret, the slight drag in your timing, the way your finger stretches could be cleaner. No one is there to tell you what to fix—you start telling yourself. And when you get good at coaching yourself, you start becoming unshakable when it’s time to perform.

Being alone isn’t punishment—it’s a privilege. It’s your time to stretch, try, experiment, and grow without fear of failure. Every moment you spend practicing alone builds your independence as a performer. You stop needing praise to keep going. You stop needing reminders. You train because it matters to you. That’s Cleaner energy.

So if you’re the one who stays after class to keep playing, or who practices at home without being told—you’re on the right path. Keep going. The silence isn’t empty. It’s where greatness gets built.
