Chapter 12: You Have to Know Where You Belong

Summary:

Cleaners don’t question whether they deserve to be in the spotlight—they know they do. Grover says that belief doesn’t come from ego—it comes from preparation. When you’ve done the work, you should walk into any space like you belong there. Not with arrogance, but with calm certainty.

How This Relates to Performing:

Before a big performance, it’s common to feel like you don’t belong on that stage. But if you’ve rehearsed, prepared, and committed, then you do. This chapter teaches you to stop shrinking. Stand tall. Own your space. The belief that you belong in the moment is part of what makes the performance go well—because it centers you in your purpose.

Belonging doesn’t mean you think you’re better than others. It means you believe you’re ready. You’ve played this song countless times. You’ve made mistakes and learned from them. You’ve stayed late, practiced alone, pushed through. That stage isn’t a stretch—it’s your next step. Cleaners carry that belief not with loudness, but with presence.

You can practice this mindset in your rehearsals. Start each session by saying: “This is my space. This is my shot.” Visualize the stage as something you already own. Train yourself to stop waiting for permission. You don’t need to be invited to perform. You already earned it.

When it’s your turn, step up like you’re right where you belong. Because you are.
