Chapter 7: Never Let Your Emotions Make You Weak

Summary:

This chapter builds on emotional control by emphasizing a rule Cleaners live by: never let emotions weaken your performance. That doesn’t mean you don’t feel—it means you don’t let those feelings make you fall apart. Grover explains that Cleaners stay strong even when things are hard. They don’t lose control. They respond, but they never react.

How This Relates to Performing:

Performing music is emotional. That’s part of the beauty. But if you let your emotions take over, they can ruin your focus. This chapter challenges you to feel deeply but play cleanly. The goal isn’t to be robotic—it’s to be steady. You want the feeling to come through the music—not through shaking hands, panicked pauses, or broken attention. Being rel relentless means keeping your body calm, your face composed, and your energy directed into every note.

There will be moments where you feel like walking off stage. Where your mind screams, “I can’t do this.” That’s exactly when you learn what emotional strength looks like. It looks like staying rooted. It looks like choosing control over collapse. Rehearse that. Build it. Every time you practice playing while uncomfortable, you’re training yourself to keep your power even when the moment feels overwhelming. That’s what Cleaners do—they train their emotions so their performance stays strong.

You’ll also feel the temptation to judge yourself mid-performance. “That intro was bad.” “I just missed a strum.” If you give into that, you’ll spiral. A Cleaner feels it—and keeps moving. They don’t let one mistake define the whole song. They breathe, focus, and make the next moment better. That discipline takes practice, and it starts with recognizing your emotions without obeying them.

So when you’re performing, stay locked in. The nerves will come. The doubt will come. Feel it—but don’t feed it. Let it move through you while your music stays strong. That’s what a Cleaner does.
