Chapter 8: Pressure Is a Privilege

Summary:

Grover reframes pressure as something to embrace, not avoid. Cleaners don’t fear pressure—they welcome it. To them, pressure means they’ve earned a moment that matters. Instead of saying, “What if I mess up?” they say, “This is my shot.” Pressure is what turns preparation into performance—and Cleaners are ready for it.

How This Relates to Performing:

Before a performance, pressure builds. You might feel butterflies, tension in your chest, or doubts in your head. This chapter teaches you not to run from that feeling. That pressure? It means you’re doing something worthwhile. You only feel it because this moment matters—and if it matters, you’re exactly where you should be.

Cleaners don’t wait for someone else to carry the moment. They want the moment. They’ve practiced for it. They’ve earned it. You’ve done the same. Every time you played through nerves or repeated a section you struggled with, you were preparing for this. So when you step into the performance space, don’t try to make the pressure disappear. Let it focus you.

You can also use pressure to sharpen your preparation. Perform under mini-pressure during practice: play in front of a friend, record yourself, rehearse with an audience of one. Learn how your body and brain respond when it’s “go time.” The more often you face that feeling, the more natural it becomes to rise to it instead of running from it.

Pressure isn’t the enemy. It’s your invitation to rise. If you feel pressure, it means you’re in the game—and the game is where Cleaners shine. So when it’s your turn to perform, don’t shrink. Show up like someone who knows they belong in that moment.
